Beginner’s Guide to Group Riding in Melbourne

Riding in a group (or bunch) is one of the best parts of cycling in Melbourne. From Beach Road to the Kinglake, bunch rides help you ride further, faster, and with more fun. But if you’re new, it can feel intimidating. I remember my first big bunch ride- nerves through the roof! Now, some of my favourite mornings are rolling out with the local crew.

Tips for Your First Bunch Ride

  1. Start with a beginner-friendly ride
Look for rides advertised as “no-drop” or beginner focused. At Baseline, we run supportive women’s cycling skills sessions designed to build confidence.

  2. Learn the calls and signals
Point out obstacles, call “stopping” or “slowing,” and always pass signals through the bunch.

  3. Hold a steady line
Avoid sudden braking or swerving. Smooth, predictable riding keeps everyone safe.

  4. Practice bunch etiquette
Don’t overlap wheels, communicate clearly, and be courteous to cars and pedestrians.

  5. Work on bike handling
Skills like cornering, braking, and rolling turns are key to safe group riding.
